Dongle upgrade paths and general information

This document will explain what possible upgrade paths are available for certain licences.

There are three critical elements that have to be considered for all purchases/upgrades.

  1. The authentication mechanism for the new licences (fixed vs. floating).
  2. The combination of ICM Full Edition and ICM Sewer Edition licences/seats.
  3. In the case of CS upgrades, the original delivery mechanism for the CS licences.

Dongle or Licence Types

Licences are available in two types. The end-user experience of the using the software is not impacted by this choice, but how we can deliver the licences is, and even more importantly, how we provide upgrades for the dongle is very different for the two types of device.

For those opting for a hardware based authentication solution, there are two sorts of dongle, old style and new style.

  1. fixed also known as a local licence
    • hardware = a physical dongle
      • Old style local (Sentinel) (black or purple dongle)
      • New style local (Hasp HL Max) (green dongle)
    • software = licence file on local pc
      • Local soft licence
  2. floating also known as a network licence
    • hardware = a physical dongle
      • Old style network (Net Hasp) (numbered 5555xxxx, red dongle, blue tag if any)
      • New style network (Hasp HL Net) (numbered 3333xxxx, red dongle, white tag)
    • software = licences on a Floating Licence Manager Server
      • Network soft licence (checked out)
      • Network soft licence (on demand)

Characteristics of dongle or licence types

InfoNet, Infoworks CS RS WS and SD

InfoNet, Infoworks CS RS WS and SD works on any type of dongle (local or network, old style or new style), so no problems here.

Infoworks ICM

InfoWorks ICM works with any type of local dongle (old style or new style) and new style network dongles. This means that an ICM upgrade of a locally authenticated copy of CS can be added to the same local dongle. So CS and ICM can work side-by-side from the same local dongle. Any client upgrading a network licence of InfoWorks CS has to be issued with a new style network dongle for the new ICM licences. The ICM licences can’t be put on the old style network dongle that originally hosted the InfoWorks CS licences, the ICM software won’t work from an old style network dongle.

Upgrading old style dongles

The old style dongles (both local and network) are upgraded using an executable file. These can be applied in any order and we can simply generate a new one in case the dongle upgrade didn't succeed.

Upgrading new style dongles

The new style dongles (both local and network) are upgraded using a .v2c file (short for vendor to customer). These must be applied in the order they are created by Innovyze support. The dongle keeps a count of the upgrade files that have been applied.

The procedure is described here: link

If for any reason a .v2c file, issued by Innovyze support, isn't applied to their dongle or licence then no future .v2c files will work. This is a feature of the new style dongles incorporated by the manufacturer of the dongles. It is vital to appreciate that all keyfixes for new styles dongles have to be applied in the order they were generated by Innovyze support. Miss one, and no future .v2c files will work unless a .c2v file (short for customer to vendor) is sent back to Innovyze support to synchronize the dongle with the update mechanism.

Mixing ICM Full Edition and ICM Sewer Edition Floating Licences

This is not possible! If you buy a combination of Full Edition and Sewer Edition floating licences we need to supply you with two new style network dongles. You’ll need one for the ICM seats that are sized as Full Edition and the other for the ICM seats that are sized as Sewer Edition. As with all InfoWorks applications (i.e. CS, RS and WS) you can’t have different sized copies of the same software on the same dongle. InfoWorks ICM Sewer Edition is not a different version of the software, it’s just a different size/capacity to the Full Edition.

Mixing old and new style network dongles

You can’t have an old style and new style network dongle in the same machine. They don’t play together. However, you can have multiple new style dongles in the same machine, which is useful for clients looking to host a mixture of ICM Full Edition and ICM Sewer Edition Floating Licences from the same physical licence server.
